The water land
Post by Rikki on Feb 10th, 2008, 08:14am
"...and so, it came to us, the ma-sutra, to remember the ways of the oceans and people we once were."
As the Reldai finished speaking, the small group of people around her rose. Each to the other bowed and headed towards the small shelters that had been created from the shell rocks salvaged from the ocean depths. One lone child remained. A little boy of six, or perhaps seven. "Reldai?" She smiled, kneeling down beside him. "Yes, Rimdak" His hand held tightly in hers, he spoke in a fearful tone. "Do you think they will remember us? The others who left the oceans and went inland to the great mountains. . .will they know?"
"Ah, my dear child. That I can not say. We can only hope that our peoples will one day be joined together." She looked out over the sparkling ocean, then to the small dwellings. Other homes, long unused, seemed a stark contrast. She knew, better than any, how many people had lived and died near the waters. How many had gone inland. Had they survived? Yet, she knew, with the ages that had passed, their survival was in jeopardy. Only three children had been born in the last generation. One child in this. Rimdak. How could he be their future? How could one child be their future?
Troubled in heart, she pulled the child to him. "Who knows what the stars hold for us, Rimdak. But whatever happens, we will always have the oceans and stars."
"Always." Re: The water land

The Reldai looked at the child, seeing clearly his fear of the now....and the future. Gently she took him by the hand and led him into the warm surf. As they sat down, letting the trailing edges of water wash over their laps she encouraged him gently. "Speak my little one."
"Reldai, when my parents passed. It was you who came to be Mother. I am afrightened of what might happen." As he spoke his voice trembled. "No, do not fear Rimdak. Your fear only holds you back from being the boy you can be. The boy your parents would have been happy to call son. What did I tell you that night?"
He frowned, his brow wrinkling as he thought of that day nearly two years past. He was young, but some things lingered in memories. "You told me they were there, in the stars and planets. The halo on the moon was their special light to me." She gently caressed his head with her aged hand. "Tell me, what do you see tonight?"
He looked up at the crescent moon, the pale blue that surrounded the glowing white sliver of an orb. "It is peaceful, Reldai."
"Yes. Peaceful. In the peace of your heart you can hear their voices, can't you? Remember, they are always part of you....right here." She gently tapped his little chest, smiling fondly down at him. "Now, do you not think it is time for you to share pillow."
He nodded, scampering up as he ran off to the small house, disappearing within the darkness. She followed him with her eyes, the rose to seek the deeper darkness of the waters depth.
Her only peace was found beneath the waves, in the embrace of the sea. Re: The water land

She'd slept, dreams bringing her to wakefulness.
The mountains stretched high above the two with a sunlight harsh on parched skin. They'd waited too long and now each lost moment was like a hour. An hour, seemed a day. Hand gripped hand as one leaned over the cliffs edge. "Hang on Rikki..."
"My hand's slipping.....Ash?! Ash!!"
She woke with a start, her hand pressed tightly to her chest. "oh, dear."
(later, as night pressed to dawn)
She stirred the hot drink, sipping from the cup as she thought about the dream. They were young, but not as young as she'd thought they'd be. Time did move on, leaving some behind and others scrambling for the truths amid the secrets.
How many secrets had they been told to those two, how many secrets needed to be revealed before only truth was given. She sighed, thinking on the words that had been passed down to them. The argument that had caused the split of peoples. The dangers from the flying beasties that had not been seen for longer than she could remember. They had been fortunate, living at the edge of the sea.
But the others,...those from whom Ash and Rikki descended....how had they fared, and why did she feel such trepidition? Would they remember things which had been forgotten by all but her? Would they remember things she'd tried to pass on, even to those of her small group?
For once, she wished away her age, knowing if she had been a few decades younger, she might have gone looking for them. As it was, she could only hope they would find their way to the oceans. To learn......to be...
To be who they truly were.

She tensed, rubbing her hand across her shoulder. Edginess set her nerves tingling and she turned to face the mountains. She closed her eyes, focusing on the two siblings. Softly she whispered, "he knows..."
She looked to her family, the group that remained. No, she could not ask this of any of them. She tipped her head back, looking to the skies. She knew it, she could feel it.
So much was happening, so very quickly. Yet, it was not quick as this was a day she'd been waiting years to see.

Reldai sat with the pack on her knees, the fire before her blazing brightly. She was tired, she was weary...she was..exhilarated.
The dreams had come heavy upon her the past nights and as difficult as the travel would be, she knew she had to find them. It was imperative, it was their life.
She rued the fact she was so old, she'd only gone half the distance the younger ones could. It would prove to be a long trek.
