A new beginning (some history)
Post by Khaer'alyn on Feb 6th, 2008, 1:59pm
He sat on the cliff’s edge, watching his clan as they went about their daily lives. Mothers and Fathers teaching their young and telling them the stories none should forget. He was proud of his clan. They were strong, in spite of the fact they could shift to two-leggers. His Father was a Weyrling when they crashed onto their home. They were immediately wary of them, cautious. It would have been easy to take them out, but his great Grandfather said no. It had been clear that they didn’t come here intentionally. The few weapons they had were enough to keep them alive, to hunt, but it would take more to kill a dragon. It was shortly after they discovered their clan and another had the ability to shift. This was carefully kept from the infestation of humans who had split into two settlements upon their arrival - Probably a wise move on their part. What would they do if they found out? Would they play nice, wait for a one to shift, then kill him? They couldn’t let them find out. With disgust it was used in later years when there were more to watch them without being noticed, to study them, sometimes in plain sight.
He could smell some two-leggers nearby and let out a growl. The centuries posted would be watching them closely as He continued to watch – and wait. He was to a Father once more. This one was special though. He had been told, as had his mate. The weyrling would hatch soon, he hoped, very soon.
“Galventh, it’s time. The egg has cracked.” That inner voice from his mate reached him. “I’m coming” the thought was returned to his mate as his wings spread out and he lifts from his perch. A few of the Adults look to see him leave – they knew, the wait was over.
He returned to the Cave that was the lair of he and his mate – Arlianth. Landing at the edge, then walking towards her as the egg cracked again. He nuzzles against her neck and she does in turn, then they watch as the weyrling wiggles her way out from the cracked egg opening it even more. “A Blue, just as they said she would be” He continued to speak through the bond they shared. “Will she really do it? Will she really bridge the gap?” There was concern in his question. “She will if we teach her as she should be taught, as you were taught by your father. She has the will and strength of the Tre Clan around her and within her” He nods as the weyrling comes to them wiggling and flopping as she gets her legs under her and flops at the feet of her parents, soft crooning comes from her as she looks up with wide sapphire eyes. He bends his neck and nuzzles and licks his offspring “Welcome little one. You are safe” the softness and gentleness of the touch to her mind brought a gentle crooning from her again “Yes lil one, welcome” with the same soft gentleness her mother also touched her mind and they both took turns licking the weyrling. This was a great day to be sure.

they watched her take her first flight, "Momma this is wonderful!" she didn't fly far, but she as she fle she caught the scent of two-leggers in the distance, she looked that way in curiosity. "Aer'alyn return" Galventh's touch was stern as he felt the curiosity within her of the fresh new scents brought to her upon the thermals. "Yes Pappa" she veered and turned back to the lair, landing with as much grace as a boulder as it hit the valley floor from the highest of peeks.
a laugh left her throat, Arlianth came to her side "We must talk young one" they took her to the edge of the lair that looked out over the largest of lakes in the area "What is it Momma" You must stay away from them for now. They are not friendly and they fear us." her father interjected at this poing "And with good reason. they are treated like nothing more than cattle. When there are too many the elders send the fighters out to cull them. They never know when that will take place, though it hasn't happened in many years it will soon and once more their fear will grow." she frowns softly and tilts her head "But why do we do that Pappa?" search your memories Aer'alyn, search back to your ancestor's memories." she closed her eyes and did what she had been taught. she opened a door in the depths of her mind and stepped through. the memories came flooding back and she took a breath "slowly child, slowly" the flood was held back and she took a breath. memories of a female, her Father's side she had to guess.
the war had raged on long, the battles were endless, the humans were destroying her kind out of fear and anger. Fear of the unknown. those who knew were destroyed along with them. Yet their own kind died far faster than her kind did. she growls as the emotions of her ancestor rises up within her. it was a mixture of fear, anger, hate, but mostly it was sorrow and anguish. her mate had been killed.
Aer'alyn's father monitored her search of memories and as the emotions began to rise inside her he drew her back to the here and now, her eyes opening as she looked to her father "So we fear them as much as they fear us" it wasn't a question, but a statement that made her father blink and her mother smile, he didn't respond right away, but there was a slow nod of his large head "Yes, that is so" she growls in frustration, "Then why keep them around at all? If they are so fierce and dangerous why not let the rogue's have their way and kill the whole lot of them? Why do we protect them against the rogues yet when they get too big we kill them ourselves?" her tail struck the floor of the lair in frustration. "they don't have the memory we do child. These are not the ones that tried to destroy us. We are trying to give them a chance, but I realize now it only makes the stories they have found to be true." sapphire eyes shift to look over the valley "We can change it Pappa. We have to change it" those words made both Galventh and Arlianth smile, as they had been told, but they knew it would not be an easy journey for her. "One day it will change my child" she felt the muzzle of her mother nuzzling her neck, she couldn't help but nuzzle in return, "When Momma? When will it change?" "i don't know Aer'alyn"
there was a long pause, her parents were communicating within themselves to each other, as she let out a soft frustrated huff her father nudged her off the edge, her wings spread out and soon they were both in the air with her. "Come this way Aer'alyn" they turned towards the east. they flew for a long time and she was growing weary, but she saw it in the distance "Those are the great ruins. In the depths of the catacombs there is where our family hatched. Your great great great grandfather. One day you will go there and search out the truths of what happened and bring them back, not only to your kind, but to the humans. For now you must learn to defend yourself. It is a part of our life we can not change. We must survive" she did understand why, so she didn't argue. they landed on the one of the still standing spires that were hidden from the two-leggers by the tall old growth trees. these ruins had been undisturbed for many centuries. she looked about with wide sapphire eyes, blinking softly and taking it all in. they didnt say anymore. "On my back little one. You are weary" she did climb onto his back and they lifted to the air, her tongue snaked out "This place is old, the spirits are old Pappa, the emotions are old" "you can taste them?" "Yes Pappa, I can" this brought a concern, but they would talk about it another day. it was time for her to learn, after a late morning nap.
they returned to the lair and she looked out over the valley. she didn't like what she felt, she didnt like the scents that came to her upon the thermals. after a few moments she felt a tug on her tail, turning her head back "Come child" she nods "yes Pappa" turning she waddles into the lair and between her Mother and Father she sleeps, her dreams though are vivid and confusing. What did they mean?

Some of the Elders had told her to stay away from the ruins, but as curious a being she was it only made her more intent on going there. Her Sire and Dame had taught her to read human words. At first she thought they might get confusing, but that wasn't so. She learned a number of languages as well, the one that intrigued her the most was the ancient draconic language. why didn't we speak it anymore? What was the fear that kept the Elders from teaching it to the young? Many of the Elders bothered her, she felt their fear as they tried to project it on the rest. Some of her kind let that fear control them, she would do everything she could to keep that from happening.
it was night as she flew under the cover of dark. The storms had come and she stayed close to the tree tops. Tonight she would be ever watchful and careful she wasn't spotted going to the great ruins. She forgot how far they were, but it was a good flight. she hit the thermals and had fun flying them as they were all over the place with the storm passing by.
Time passed, hours went by and she reached them. she landed on one of the higher platforms and moved under the cover of the highest platform. she glanced around the doors and noticed they were all for two-leggers, she growled a little but she shifts and makes her way inside. As she entered lights came on and they made her blink and growl, waiting there while her eyes came accustomed to them, then slowly she made her way down the hall way.
her tongue snaking out to taste the air, she shuddered a little. the emotions and scents were so old, but strong. she felt like she had wandered for a long time. Unsure where she went, though she wasn't lost. this was simply a new place and she had never been here before. it was then that she paused. A new scent, a fresh scent. Someone was here. He was dragon, one of the other clan perhaps? she could hear him coming closer "Hello Aer'alyn" the voice touched her mind and she paused "Umm.. Hello" she followed the scent until she came to a room with large wooden doors, pushing the door open she saw him there
"Do they know you are here?" she shook her head, "No, not even my Sire or Dame know I have come" he nods as he continues looking through the bookd "Good. Come I have some books for you to start with" she didn't move though. "Who are you?" the voice and scent were familiar, but she'd not seen anyone in their human form before. the image of a great silver came to her mind "I am Nraith" she bowed her head, "Forgive me Elder I didn't know" with a chuckle came his reply "No worries young one" he motioned her forwards and she approached. he handed her two books "Your Sire and Dame made sure you were taught everything you needed to read these books. these three are a good start" she took them and began to read as he slipped out of the room through a different door.
she read through the first book. it described the Rider, went through their teachings, their purpose. she found it interesting to say the least. It described the bond they shared with the dragon. Three accounts were given, she read each one with interest, each word memorized. sapphire eyes lit up with interest and awe. it was then she realized he was watching her, she lifts her eyes to him and she finds herself a little embarrassed "It's ok Aer'alyn, it is interesting reading" he moved inside and took a book he was reading "Why do we not seek it out again? Why do we keep the humans as cattle rather than help them understand us?" she knew the answer to that already, it was fear and his words confirmed it "It is simply put fear. Fear that they will try to do to us what the others had done. So we have lowered ourselves to our lowest state- Animal, beast. Acting as every other beast or animal does. It is quite sad. There are a few that sought out the truth over the years. Some have been killed for it, others have not told anyone that they know the truth and now they work to change things. but as long as we continue to cull the humans and destroy them when they get to big for our comfort nothing will ever change." she nods and goes back to reading over one of the accounts of Dragon and Rider, she sighs gently. she wants to experience new things, experience the things that she felt through her ancestor, things that she reads here. she could feel his eyes on her again when she realized her emotions were flowing off her like a river flow, she smiles a little "How do you do it? how do you stay by and let them continue? How do you let the madness continue?" Nraith just smiled "I help those of our kind like you who seek the truth to know the truth. those who cannot shift and come here I take the knowledge to them when I know they are genuine in the seeking. I am careful though as there have been those over the years who have sought to destroy this city and all the knowledge within." she shook her head at that, she didn't have to reply he could taste her frustration. He didn't say anything more and let her read.
she read until she fell asleep in the large chair she'd taken. she didn't notice Nraith had come in and removed the book and set it aside, then moved her to a couch where he covered her and let her sleep. He slipped away for a while though, likely to hunt and bring back food, she would be hungry when she woke up.

The years past and she had made many other visits to the old city, but even those grew less and less. One had taken an interest in her, but he was an elder, one of the younger ones, but an elder nonetheless, and she wasn't sure. Jezraith had made a point of hanging around her as she grew, though he didn't know of her many trips to the old city, most had either forgotten about it, or thought it of no use to them. If only they know. she liked him, but she wasn't sure it he who she would choose for a mate, and she would do the choosing. she was young still and had plenty of years left before she would need to consider carefully.
